What is a herb garden, without Thyme!?
Versatile and beautiful, thymes should have a place in every garden.
How to grow
Thymes need full sun. But in a city like Mumbai, where we have scotching heat, I would suggest partial shade for them.
Soil for Thyme : They need a dry, gritty, loose soil. I personally picked up the soil from the sidewalks of Mumbai. Added lots of compost in it to make it more loose.
one can add sand and organic materials like hay to improve drainage.
Sowing Seeds : Seeds should be sown on the top of the soil, cover it with very little compost.
As you can see, small seedlings have started to pop up. 🙂
Thyme can be planted as a ground cover, around paving stones, or near a wall. You can also plant it in containers.
Thin stems, tiny leaves and the smell.. only when you will grow it, you will know what I am talking about. It makes you alive!
When and How to Harvest :
Clip off leaves and flowers as you need them, but thyme is usually harvested in mid-summer. As you harvest the thyme, leave some of the stem so that the plant can regrow.
Thyme typically grows to a height of about 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters)
One can use this herb for marinations, salads and can used in italian food.
