Periwinkle aka Sadhabahar aka Vinca

VINCA

Plant the Vinca/Periwinkle along the edges of your pot, encircling the taller plants in the middle. This is a trailing plant that grows out of the pot. If planted in the middle, it may overgrow inside the pot and prevent other plants in the pot from thriving. I on the other hand.. gave them separate pot.

They love sun, but not for long period of time. Few hours of direct sun is more than enough for them. As too much direct afternoon sunlight can burn the plant.

Add mulch to the top of the soil to protect the Vinca periwinkle and other plants from extreme temperatures and keep the soil moist.

In the field of medicine, many life-saving drugs have been developed from plants. In this category, few have been as successfully employed as the rosy periwinkle, Cathanthus roseus.

Native to the island nation of Madgascar off the southeastern coast of Africa, the rosy periwinkle is an evergreen shrub bearing five-petaled pink flowers, and it is a much-beloved ornamental garden plant. In India the plant goes by several folk names, including “Good Night,” “Shameless Maria,” and “Cat’s Vinca.”

Periwinkle also comes in small shrub. It cares not for the world. It rejoices in sun or rain, or the seaside, in good or indifferent soil and often grows wild. It is known as ‘Sadabahar’ meaning ‘always in bloom’ and is used for worship. Numerous soft-wood branches from the ground, give it an appearance of fullness. Closely planted it can have an impressive effect with its various colors. This is one flower which can be found all over India. Lots of cultivators have been developed with various colors, from red to white.

  1. how can i grow it from seeds i have a seed but in past i fail to germinate it and in which month should i saw it

    • I have used the seeds in october… these flowers grow all year long… dont put the seeds in direct sun. Sow them and place the pot where it gets filtered sun or couple of hours of sun. Once seedlings appear place them under the direct sun.

  2. one of my fav plants here in south Florida! Always blooming, and with low water needs, it is about as perfect as can be! i trim my longer branches and they split and you can keep them more compact and better looking.

    • Thanks Julie, they are so simple yet so effective, I would surely recommend them to beginners as they are no fuss. And I shall try with trimming my branches too, they are all over the place 🙂
