Hey all you lovely people! I know I am coming after long time, But I had a reason, I had lost my 1000 plus gardening pictures :(( Blame the technology. Stupid delete means delete! But recently I found few pics of Bok Choy that I grew.. You would surely want to know about this one. I bet!
Bok Choy
Bok Choy also called as Pak choi can be used in salads or stir-fries. Largely used in Oriental dishes as a cooked vegetable when semi-mature or as fully-grown heads. It grows best in partial sunny position. On an average they need 3-4 hours of good sunlight and they are set!
Do you know how expensive this vegetable is to buy? First of all even in a city like Mumbai, it’s not available at every vegetable vendor. And when it’s available, it costs about Rs.100-150 for one or couple of two baby Bok Choy. So all you hungry gardeners, Please ATTENTION- This vegetable will be on your plate in 30 days. Yes! In one month, from seed to plate to tummy:)

Another awesome quality of this plant is their Germination Rate. I would give this plant 100% when it comes to germination. Whatever you sow, comes out of soil. (if not more :)) I threw 100 seeds together.. And they all were there.. I didn’t know what to do with them.. all of them looked healthy. But I had to decide, I couldn’t keep it all!! Neither I had this much space nor pots. I decided to keep the best out of 100, even after throwing (supposedly unhealthy 20 seedlings) I still had 80 great one in my hand. Still too, many!
So I decided to use milk cartons! milk carton will survive one month easily. and then one can dispose it. Finally after using few pots and cartons I had 80 Bok Choy,

And they are not even all of them. (I wish I had my pics;()
Soil Type: They like loose soil, so mis it with coco-peat, compost. ( Perlite- if you can)
Diseases-
If you think You and me are the only one loves this vegetable. well, We got company!. Pests are common for bokchoy are aphids and mites.

But both can be controlled by neem spray. or delicately wash them.. make sure all of those mites are out. even if one is left, they will all come back again.
Even after disease attack, I still had 60 plus bok choy, which me, my family and my friends all thoroughly enjoyed.

Hi Shipra, I accidentally came across your blog while searching for a lot of information on gardening as I am just getting initiated into this wonderful stress buster. I have been looking for gardening details which are relevant for Mumbai climate and I found your beautiful blog and envied every picture I saw. I am far off from what you are doing but it is truly an inspiration to begin and yes with cubby hole homes, I need to see what best can be done.
I wanted to check if I can plant some Aster mix seeds now. I am also looking for some Impatiens seeds which once I get wanted to plant them. For both is this a good time to plant seeds? My issue is I do not
get much sunlight through out my apt. except in one balcony for a couple of hrs in the afternoon. Would love your suggestions.

Aster and Impatiens both of them need less sun and Aster is perfect for winter weather. And impatiens like harsh sun.
But sadly 2 hours sun a day could be little less for them. But I think you should surely give a try especially with Aster. It’s a perfect season for them.

Hey Shipra, I’ve started growing boo chou, coriander, spinach, fenugreek, sarson, mustard, eggplant, tomato after getting inspired by you 🙂 It’s such a pleasure to make methi, sarson and pluck coriander every day from my garden. I’m enjoying it thoroughly.
The banana peels and egg shell idea works so well. i just wanted to ask you which neem oil is the best? I mean the brand?
Hey Hina! I am so happy you are doing this:) saw ur bok choy. What a great job. There are so many brands now a days… and I haven’t used much neem oil. But the only thing you need to check is that there are no chemicals mix in it as you will be mostly using on your food crop.
